MACON, Ga. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State’s Amy Bond is constantly looking for ways to improve the Seminoles women’s golf program. When the weather in the southeastern region of the U.S. dealt her and her team lemons at times this spring, Bond made lemonade. The Seminoles lost one playing date at the Florida State Match-Up in Tallahassee and two at the Dickson Intercollegiate in Houston because of rain. Instead of losing those NCAA allotted competition dates, Bond acted quickly and the Seminoles will play in the Brickyard Collegiate at the Brickyard Golf Course beginning Sunday.
Because the field of 14 was already set, the Seminoles will participate in the event with a squad of five who will all play as individuals. Florida State’s lineup will be made up of senior Lexie Flerlage, sophomores Amanda Doherty, Ashley Mangan, and Sandra Salonen and freshman Kathleen Sumner.
“Playing in this event will give this group of girls a tremendous amount of experience,” said Bond. “As a coach, I am always looking for opportunities for every player on our team to improve, and I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to bring our team up to Macon for this tournament.”
Sophomore Amanda Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) enters the Brickyard Collegiate as the Seminoles top-ranked golfer with a 72.00 stroke average in 22 rounds during eight events in her second season at Florida State. She leads the team with nine rounds scored at par, 19 of her 22 rounds scored at 75 or better and two top-10 finishes. Doherty led the Seminoles with a career-best second place finish at the Florida State Match-Up in February.
Live scoring is available at Birdiefire with recaps on Seminoles.com and twitter (@fsugolf).
Florida State’s participation in the Brickyard Collegiate will lead the Seminoles into the ACC Championships to begin their postseason play. The ACC Championships will be played on April 21-22-23 at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C. – a change in dates and location because of the severe weather in North Carolina this winter.
