GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) – Senior Maria Salinasfinished in a tie for second place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in fourth place in the team standings as play in the 24th annual ACC Women’s Golf Championship at Sedgefield Country Club came to a conclusion. Salinas tied the school record for best individual finish in the ACC Championship to help Florida State to its fourth top four team finish in the last six seasons.
Duke won its first ACC title since 2008 as it claimed a 10 stroke victory over second place North Carolina. The Blue Devils led the team standings wire to wire. The Blue Devils has now won a record 15 ACC women’s golf championships. Lindy Duncan of Duke won the individual championship with a six stroke victory over three players – including Florida State’s Salinas – who finished in a tie for second in the individual standings.
The Seminoles, who entered the event ranked No. 25 in the nation by GolfStat, defeated two teams – No. 22 NC State and No. 28 Virginia – who were ranked among the nation’s top 30 entering the event.
“We battled back well from our round on Friday,” said head coach Amy Bond. “Now we prepare for regionals. We will take what we learned from this tournament and use it to get to nationals.”
Salinas (Lima, Peru) carded her second consecutive score of 1 under par 70 in the final round to finish in a tie for second place in the individual standings with a 3 over par total of 216 for the 54 holes tournament. She was a total of two strokes under par with identical scores of 70 in the second and third rounds after opening the event with a five over par score of 76. Salinas was two under par on her final seven holes with two birdies including a birdie on her final hole of the tournament.
Salinas joined three other Seminoles in the history of the tournament who have finished in second place in the individual standings of the ACC Championship. She joined Mary Lee Cobick (1992), Tiffany Faucette (1995) and Caroline Westrup(2007 and 2008) as Seminoles who have finished as runners-up for the coveted title of ACC individual champion. In finishing in a tie for second place, Salinas established a personal best in a conference tournament – one spot better than her finish of tied for third at the Southern Conference Championship in 2009.
Junior Jessica Negron(Ocala, Fla.) finished in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings with a three round total of 220. She finished the event with back-to-back scores of 72 in the second and third rounds after a first round score of 76. Negron was one under par over her final eight holes to finish her final round with a 72 and the tournament with a seven over par score of 220.
Negron’s finish of tied for seventh is the best of her career after finishing in a tie for 11th place in 2011 and in a tie for 25th place in 2010.
The Seminoles will now look forward to making their seventh consecutive NCAA appearance when the participants for the three regional championships are announced. The regionals are scheduled for May 10-12 at three different sites: University Park, Pa. (Penn State University), Columbus, Ohio (The Ohio State University) and Erie, Colo. (University of Colorado).
