WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
The Florida State University men’s golf team survived a one round playoff with Oklahoma State and Tennessee for the final two team spots in the final round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship on the Gold Course at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course. The Seminoles will now compete as one of the nation’s top 15 teams in the final round of the championship to determine the team and individual national champions. The final round begins at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The Seminoles shot an even par team score of 280 in the third round and moved into a three-way tie for 14th place in the team standings after the first 54 holes of the event. With only the top 15 teams advancing play in the final round, the Seminoles were forced into a five-man, one hole playoff to decide which of the two teams would continue playing in the fourth and final round of the event. Each of the five golfers on each of the three teams were sent to different holes (1, 2, 16, 17, 18), the scores were tallied after each hole and the two teams – Florida State and Oklahoma State – were decided.
The Seminoles’ playoff holes went as follows: Seath Lauer (hole 1) par; Cameron Knight (hole 2) par; Torstein Nevestad (hole 16) double bogey (thrown out); Matt Savage (hole 17) birdie and Jonas Blixt (hole 18) par. The Seminoles finished the play-off round at one-under par. Oklahoma State also advanced with a two-under par total while Tennessee was the non-advancing team with an even par play-off total.
Sophomore Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) continued his stellar play in the national championship as he carded an even-par score of 70 in the third round. His six-under par total of 210 for the first three rounds has him in a tie for eighth place and has him only two strokes out of the individual lead. Savage was very consistent with two birdies and two bogeys to go along with 14 holes of par in the third round. He birdied his final four holes to finish at even par on the day.
Freshman Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) led the Seminoles in the third round with a career-low score of 67 – his first under-par score of the event. He was two-under par on his back nine with three birdies and only one bogey after finishing his front nine with two birdies and only one bogey. Coupled with his two-over par 72 in the second round, Knight is a total of one-under par during the second and third rounds of the tournament.
Junior Jonas Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) continued his stellar play as he turned in his second consecutive score of one-over par 71. He played his best golf with four birdies and a two-under par score on his front nine. He closed on his back nine with three bogeys and a three-over par score to finish at one-over par for the afternoon. Blixt has carded 12 consecutive rounds at or below 73 and has not been above a 73 since the third round of the U.S. Collegiate on April 11.
Senior Torstein Nevestad (Oslo, Norway) carded a four-over par 74 while freshman Seath Lauer (Huntington, Ind.) finished with his tournament best of two-over par 72. Nevestad bettered his second round score by six strokes after carding an 80 in the second round while Lauer has now improved his play in the event by seven strokes when compared to his first round score of 79.
Stanford leads Coastal Carolina by two strokes in the race for the team championship. The Cardinal have a three-round total of 828 and the Chanticleers have a total of 830. Georgia Tech (sixth place) and Duke (tied for 10th place) are ACC teams who will join the Seminoles in the field on the final day of the event. Rob Grube of Stanford, Klye Stanley of Clemson and Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech are tied for the individual lead with identical three-round scores of 204.
