Seminoles Advance On First Day Of Pre-Qualifying

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team had a successful first day of the ITA All-American Championships Pre-Qualifying with five Seminoles taking the courts. Thunderstorms in the area delayed play in the late afternoon before the matches resumed Indoors. The University of Tulsa is hosting the event until Oct. 7.

“I thought it was a very good day,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I was pleased with how we won a close match with Anderson being down set points and Cristian pulling out a tough match in the third set. I was pleased to get through the firth day with having three guys to get through the next day to join the others in Qualifying.”

Sophomore Dominic Cotrone won the first match of the day for the Seminoles when he defeated Brandon MacDonald of Xavier 6-0, 6-2 to play Bryan Welnetz of Penn State tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the third round. Senior Anderson Reed nabbed the second win of the day with an outstanding 7-6 (14), 6-1 win. The No. 10 seed topped Jesse Kiuru of St. Mary’s College and plays Badr Cherradi of Southern Illinois in the third round tomorrow at 10 a.m.

“I was fortunate enough to pull that first tiebreaker out which enaabled me to ride the momentum through the second set,” said Reed. “It was a good start to a long week here in Tulsa.”

Sophomore Cristian Gonzalez Mendez posted the last win of the day for the Seminoles with a tough 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over TCU’s Orlando Superlano. The No. 6 seed takes on Norbert Nemcsek of UNF tomorrow at 11:30 p.m.

“It was a tough match,” began Gonzalez Mendez. “We both played and fought really hard. We had a lot of long rallies which made the match physical. At the end of the match I felt strong and was running down balls to win the third set.”

Redshirt-freshman João Gauer lost in the first round 6-2, 6-0 to No. 18 seed Stefan Vinti of Mississippi State while freshman Michael Rinaldi fell to Rodolfo Bustamante of TCU 7-6, 6-1.

Seniors Jordan Kelly-Houston and Andres Bucaro along with sophomore Benjamin Lock play in the Qualifying bracket beginning Monday. Reed, Gonzalez Mendez and Cotrone need to win two matches Sunday to advance to the Qualifying bracket. Playing in the qualifying doubles brackets are doubles partners Cotrone and Reed, Bucaro and Lock, and Davis and Kelly-Houston.

Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November.
