Game 7 – Florida State 8 , UCF 1
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State baseball team advanced to the NCAA
Super Regional with a decisive 8-1 victory over UCF on Sunday afternoon in
Game 7 of the NCAA Baseball Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium.
Seminole freshman hurler Robby Read recorded his first career complete game,
allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out six, and
improved to 3-1 on the year. FSU improved to 49-16 overall while UCF ended
its solid season at 43-19.
The Seminoles went on top early, rallying for three runs off of four hits
in the second inning. Karl Jernigan led off with a walk and what followed
were four consecutive singles by Pichi Balet, John Halliday, Brett Groves
and Blair McCaleb. Halliday and McCaleb recorded RBI.
FSU extended its lead to 4-0 in the third when Marshall McDougall led off
with a double and scored on a single by Jernigan. The Tribe had four hits
in the inning, with the latter two coming off of UCF relief pitcher Von
Stertzbach pitched himself into a bind in the fourth, walking McCaleb and
Chris Smith, but the UCF defense got him out of the jam with a triple play.
Hot-hitter John-Ford Griffin lined out to UCF first baseman Matt Bowser, who
stepped on first base for the second out and threw to shortstop Mike Myers
at second base for the third out.
Florida State picked up two more runs in the fifth inning. It was deja’ vu
as McDougall again doubled and scored on a base hit by Jernigan, who went to
second on a ground out by Balet. Jernigan went to third when Halliday
recorded his second hit of the game, and then scored when UCF second baseman
Mike Fox misplayed the ball on the play.
Read had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the seventh when UCF’s Rich
Wallace belted a solo home run to lead off the inning. Matt Bowser singled
to center for UCF’s second hit of the game.
The Seminoles put the game out of reach with two more runs in the ninth.
Smith extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a single to right to lead
off the inning. He went on to score on another error by UCF’s Fox, which
allowed Griffin to reach base and go to second. Ryan Barthelemy blasted a
two-base rocket off the right center fence to score Griffin.
UCF starter Jesse Marlo got the loss and fell to 1-3 for the season.
Halliday went 3-for-4 with one RBI while Jernigan went 2-for-4 with two RBI
as FSU outhit the Golden Knights, 14-2.
