TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Seminoles hosted Miami on Saturday, February 9th, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. Florida State entered the contest with a record of 4-0 and looked to remain undefeated on the season. The Seminoles defeated the 26th ranked Hurricanes by a score of 6-1 and improved their record to 5-0.
“Going into this match, I knew we could do it,” said sophomore Alex Herrera. “We played really hard today and just took care of business.”
Florida State got off to a slow start in doubles action. Xavier Luscan and Mat Cloer were down 2-6 in No. 3 doubles before coming back to defeat Todd Widom and Tarik El Bassiouni of Miami, 9-7. Sophomores Alex Herrera and Jarrod Owen took their match to a tiebreaker as they defeated Thomas Smid and Jose Lieberman by a score of 9-8 (4). In No. 2 doubles, Gustav Bucht and Romain Jurd fell to Andrew Golub and Andrew McDade of Miami, 8-6.
The Seminoles gained confidence after securing the first point of the match. In singles play, Herrera earned the second point for Florida State as he overpowered McDade at the No. 5 position, 6-2, 6-2. Minutes later, at the No. 3 position, freshman Cloer looked strong as he defeated Golub by a score of 6-1, 6-3. The match was clinched when Jurd defeated Smid of Miami in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Owen earned the fifth point on the day for the Seminoles in No. 6 singles as he defeated Max LePivert of Miami by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Chip Webb defeated Lieberman of Miami in a tough match, 6-4, 6-7 (7), (10-4). In Miami’s only win of the day, at No. 1 singles, Luscan fell to Widom, ranked 40th nationally, by a score of 6-4, 7-5.
“Earning the first point of the match in doubles was the turning point,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “After that, we jumped out to a quick lead on five of six courts in singles. Once we jumped ahead, we never looked back.”
Florida State has the week off before traveling to Nashville, Tenn. to take on the Commodores of Vanderbilt on Saturday, February 16th. The next home match for the Seminoles is scheduled for Tuesday, February 19th, as they face Stetson. The match will begin at 3:00 p.m.
