TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -Toney Douglas scored 14 points in the second half, including a pair of crucial free throws with 39 seconds left, to lead Florida State to a 59-52 victory over SMU in Tuesday’s final in the Colonial Classic.
SMU’s Jon Killen scored 15 points, but also had eight turnovers. Donatas Rackauskas added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. The Mustangs also got 12 points from Derrick Roberts.
SMU (2-1) held a 26-25 halftime lead, and led late in the second half.
Douglas, a transfer from Auburn, hit three consecutive baskets to give Florida State a 45-41 lead with 5:29 left in the game. SMU closed to within two points with 44 seconds left before Douglas’ free throws.
In the first game Tuesday, Boo Richardson scored 23 points to lead Illinois State to a 67-50 victory over McNeese (La.) State. Greg Dilligard added 20 for Illinois State while Jarvis Bradley led McNeese (0-3) with 15.
All-America, National and ACC Player of the Year candidate Al Thornton, who averaged 17.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the three-game event, was named the Most Valuable Player. Junior Jason Rich and sophomore Toney Douglas of Florida State were named to the All-Tournament team.
