Seminoles Capture Two Flight Championships At Miami Invite

Coral Gables, Fla. – Florida State’s women’s tennis team concluded play at the Miami Invite on Sunday, November 11. The invite concluded with two flight championships for the Seminoles; one in Draw no. 5 of singles and the other in B Doubles. The Invite, which lasted from Friday, November 10 – Sunday, November 12, consisted of Miami, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Iowa and Clemson.

In Singles Draw 5, junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) took home the title. Marobela defeated Clemson’s Alexandra Luc 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in the semifinals to defeat Maria Vallasciani of FIU 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the final round.

In the B Doubles Draw, senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) and freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, TX) defeated D’Armas and Petrauskaite of FIU 8-6 to make home the championship. Junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) paired up with sophomore Suzanna Mansour (Greenacres, Fla.) to defeat VanAdrichem and Hadziselimovic of Clemson 8-1 to take third place.

Playing in the 1 Singles Draw was freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah). Macfarlane fell in the championship round to ACC foe Laura Vallverdu of Miami 3-6, 4-6. Senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) represented FSU in the #1 Backdraw where she fell to Clemson’s Ani Mijackika 6-2, 5-7, 8-10. Slater defeated Elodie Wendling of FSU 6-3, 6-3 for seventh place.

Walter was to face Audrey Banada of Miami in the championship round of the No. 2 Singles Draw but withdrew due to a shin injury. Walter defeated Mari Brito of Clemson 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the final round of play. Wente fell to Audrey Banada of Miami in the semifinals 3-6, 2-6 before defeating Brito of Clemson 6-3, 6-2 for third.

Playing in the No. 3 Singles Draw was Foley. Foley fell in the semifinals to Marijana Cutuk of FIU 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 but defeated Hillary Mintz of the Iowa for third place 7-5, 6-3.

Mansour represented Florida State in the No. 4 Singles Draw. She fell to Priscilla Castillo of FIU 3-6, 4-6 in the semifinals and lost of Shilla D’Armas of FIU 6-2, 6-7. 4-10 to take home fourth.

Macfarlane/Slater defeated Kecht/Wendling of FAU 8-3 in the A Doubles Backdraw to take home seventh.

The Seminoles concluded a very strong fall season which included Slater/Macfarlane attending the Indoor National Championships for the first time in Seminole history. They team will take the courts again on January 19, 2007 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
