Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis squad (8-3) beat the Florida International Golden Panthers (2-4) 6-1 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, FL on Friday afternoon. The Seminoles recorded their seventh win at home during the 2004 campaign.
FSU jumped out of the gate quickly putting points on the board in doubles area. Senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) and newcomer Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/ Boca Raton Prep) started the Garnet and Gold off, winning at the two spot, against Desanka Jovanovic and Paula Zabala, 8-5. Senior tandem Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) and Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bradenton Academy) clinched the doubles victory besting Christina Suard and Sheila D’Armas 8-5. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and freshman Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) won at the number one position, in the longest match of the day, beating Mei Ly and Bruna Discordia, 9-7.
After winning the doubles point, FSU picked up singles wins in five matches to secure the team victory. Dumitrescu clinched the team victory, besting Zabala 6-1, 6-2 at the number one position while Moldovan wrapped up her eleventh victory of the season to remain undefeated, winning at No. 2 against Ly 6-1, 6-0. Deason won at the four spot, 6-3, 6-3, playing Discordia.
In a match that took roughly two-and-a-half hours, Denny came out the victor against Jovanovic at the three position, 6-3, 7-6(2). Sophomore Alina Mihailescu (Constanta, Romania/Mircea cel Batran) lost a close match to Suard, 7-6, 6-4 at the six spot.
The Seminoles take the court again tomorrow, hosting the No. 27 Tulane Green Wave at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m. The Tulane match is the second of four matches taking place in four days. Other matches include Michigan State on Mon., March 8 and Penn State on Wed., March 10.
