The Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams kickoff their seasons at the Appalachian State Mountaineer Open, August 29 in Boone, North Carolina. Both teams enter the meet with high expectations for the 2003 season.
The 2002 season found the Seminole men matching their best finish of the ACC Championship and placed 4th in the NCAA South Region. The men’s team is led by junior runner Joep Tigchelaar, who placed 12th in last year’s Mountaineer Open. Returning runners Kevin Cook and AJ Wilson are coming off strong seasons. Both placed in the top 25 at last year’s meet. The Noles placed 3rd overall behind meet champion High Point University and runner up Wake Forest.
On the women’s side, the 2002 season had Florida State enjoying one of the most decorated years in the history of the program. The season was capped off by the Tribe’s first ever appearance in the NCAA National Championships, where the Lady Seminoles were able to capture a 28th place finish. This year’s squad consists of junior runners Natalie Hughes and Anne Clinton. Hughes and Clinton placed 7th and 10th respectively at the 2002 Mountaineer Open. As a team, the women are looking to exceed their 3rd place meet finish from a year ago.
