Seminoles Cross Country Sweeps Mountaineer Open

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State men’s and women’s cross country teams took Boone, N.C. by storm winning the Mountaineer Open on Friday, September 3, 2004. Five-time All-American senior Natalie Hughes (Grand Junction, CO/Palisade) and sophomore sensation Luke Beevor (Luton, England/ Icknield) took home individual titles at the meet, helping FSU to 19- and 21-point wins, respectively. The men’s team beat fellow conference rival Clemson, who finished in second with 55 points while the women bested the home team – Appalachian State – by 18 points.

On the men’s side, the Tribe placed one-two-three in the standings with junior transfer Sean Burris (Rockledge, FL/USF) and senior captain Eddy Rodriguez (Miami, FL/FIU) finishing right behind Beevor with times of 25:14.30 and 25:14.50, respectively. Beevor cross the line to win the meet title at 25:14.10.

Sophomore Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England/Turton) ran a collegiate best time of 25:28.20, shattering his prior personal best, recorded at the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. Junior Kevin Cook (Fern Park, FL/Lyman) rounded out the Seminole scoring finishing in 25:45.10 for tenth place. All scorers for the FSU men finished in the top ten overall.

For the women’s team, the Seminoles took first, second and third place and all scorers finished in the top seven at the meet. Hughes completed the 5K course in 18:18.20 followed by freshmen Laura Bowerman (Tampa, FL/King) and Kirsten Hagen (Blacksburg, VA/Christiansburg), who finished their first intercollegiate meet in 18:27.90 and 18:34.40. Sophomore Meredith Urban (Davie, FL/Green Hope) finished in sixth place in 19:07.80 while freshman Cristen Litz (Sarasota, FL/Sarasota) placed seventh in a time of 19:16.30.

Florida State hosts the Florida Intercollegiate Championship on Saturday, September 11, 2004. The meet begins with the collegiate men’s race at 7:30 a.m. followed by the women’s race (8:10 a.m.) and then the high school and junior varsity races.
