TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida State led 16-0 after seven minutes and went
on to beat Sam Houston State 88-51 in its season opener Friday.
Florida State (1-0) did not allow Sam Houston (0-1) to score on its first 12
possessions, which included eight missed field goals and four turnovers.
The Seminoles, who converted on seven of their first eight possessions, were
led by Ron Hale with 19 points and Terrel Baker with 16.
Sam Houston, under first-year coach Bob Marlin, returned three starters from
last year’s team, which finished 9-17 overall and 7-9 in the Southland
The Bearkats, who shot just 37 percent from the field, were led by Jeremy
Burkhalter’s 17 points.
Florida State outrebounded Sam Houston 45-20 and shot 51 percent from the
FSU led by as many as 23 points in the first half and finished the half with
a 42-20 lead. Hale had 13 first-half points and Baker had 12 to help the
Seminoles take command early.
Sam Houston State came within 48-30 with 16:10 left on a basket by
Burkhalter, but Florida State went on a 17-4 run to stretch the lead to 65-34
with 8:33 remaining.
