Seminoles Down South Florida, 6-1, In Women’s Tennis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team defeated the University of South Florida Bulls Monday, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The Seminoles move to 9-7 on the season, while the Bulls’ record falls to 3-7.


At the no. 1 doubles position for the Seminoles, the 43rd ranked team of Jessica Balbuena and Lauren Walker defeated Natalie Schwartz and Genevieve Houle, 8-5. Sophomore Anca Dumitrescu and Beth Lawrence also won for the Seminoles at the no. 3 doubles position, clenching the first point of the match for the Seminoles. After trailing the entire match, sophomore Christina Denny and senior Alida Gallovits tied up the no. 2 doubles match at seven all before taking the final two games to conclude the doubles sweep for the Seminoles.


In singles action, Denny led the Seminoles, easily defeating Ashlee Callahan at the no. 4 singles position 6-2, 6-0. Soon after, at no. 1 singles, Dumitrescu took her match over Natalie Schwartz of 6-3, 6-1. Gallovits, Amber Tantee and Meredith Fish also won in singles for the Seminoles.


The Seminoles begin their ACC season on a four-match road stint. All four matches will be played against ACC opponents. The first game is scheduled for March 16th in College Park, Md. against the Terrapins of the University of Maryland.
