“You can tell what kind team we have by the willpower the team comes to practice with after a loss. We practiced very hard after our loss to Wake Forest. Coach has instilled in us that you play the way you practice. We played hard in practice leading up to our game against Cleveland State.”

Monte Cummings

SETTING THE SCENE

Florida State continues its four-game homestand as it plays host to American University in its final game before breaking for the holiday season. Following Saturday’s game, the Seminoles will not meet or practice as a team until the night of Dec. 25 when they begin preparations for their game against Virginia Tech Dec. 27. Florida State is looking to tie its season-long winning streak of two games against the Eagles.

ARRINGTON CONTINUES CLIMB UP ACC ASSIST LIST
Senior co-captain Delvon Arrington, who recorded a season-high nine assists in Florida State’s victory over Cleveland State Wednesday night, needs only four assists against American to move into 24th place on the all-time ACC assists list. Arrington enters Saturday’s game against American with 552 career assists and is looking to pass current Duke assistant coach Johnny Dawkins on the list. Dawkins had 555 assists during his career at Duke.

SEMINOLES’ CUMMINGS IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT
Senior Monte Cummings, who scored a career-high 28 points against Cleveland State Wednesday night, is averaging 22.0 points and shooting 70.3 percent form the field in the last two Seminole games. He scored 28 points (on 12-of-16 shooting from the field) against Cleveland State and totaled 16 (on seven-of-11 shooting from the field) against Wake Forest in the Seminoles’ ACC season opener Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C. Cummings’s 44 points is rivaled by his previous-best two game high of 38 points (19 vs. both Duke and UNC Asheville Jan. 4 and Jan. 6, 2001). Cummings established career-high statistics for field goals made (12), field goals attempted (16) and minutes played (33) while tying his career-high for 3-point shots made (one) and 3-point shots attempted (two).

LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO:

  • Win its second consecutive game of the season for the second time this season and tie its season-high. The Seminoles also won two consecutive games against Savannah State (Nov. 20) and Elon (Nov. 23),

  • Win its final game before the holiday break for the third consecutive season and fourth time in five seasons under head coach Steve Robinson. The biggest pre-holiday victory for Robinson and the Seminoles came on Dec. 23, 1997 as Florida State defeated then No. 5 ranked Arizona, 84-79, in Tallahassee,

  • Play against a former Virginia guard in the first of two consecutive games. American’s head coach Jeff Jones was the Cavaliers’ point guard from (1979-82) and Virginia Tech’s Ricky Stokes led the Cavaliers from 1981-84. Florida State plays Virginia Tech Dec. 27.
