TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Senior Lauren Scott and freshman Marrita Royster-Crockett collected a team-high 11 kills but it was not enough as the Florida State volleyball team (5-12, 3-6 ACC) tumbled to the University of Virginia (12-6, 7-2) 3-1 on Lucy McDaniel Court at Tully Gym Friday night.  Game scores were 30-23, 23-30, 30-24, and 39-18. 


 


Beth Shelton and Sarah Kirkwood totaled 19 and 18 kills, respectively, to lead the Cavaliers offensive attack.  Virginia hit .247 compared to .157 for FSU. 


 


The Seminoles out-blocked Virginia 13.0 – 6.0, receiving blocks from senior Kristen Rust (2-3), sophomore Makini Thompson (2-2), Scott (0-4), junior Jessica Skower (0-3), Royster-Crockett (1-1) senior Andreza Santos (0-2) and junior Sarah Griffin (0-1). 


 


Sophomore Summer Weissing recorded a match-high 23 digs, Rust had 12 digs, Santos tallied 11 digs and Skower had 10 digs. 


 


In game one, Florida State hit a low .140 with 12 kills on 43 attempts while the Cavaliers tallied a match-high .333 hitting percentage to take 30-23 victory.


 


The Seminoles had their best outing in the second contest and hit .250.  The scored tied up on seven occasions and switched leaders three times, but ultimately FSU pulled through with a 30-23 win.


 


The third game was a close affair as once again the game tied up eight times and swapped leaders on three occasions.  The Cavs inched their way to a 30-24 win.


 


After a 6-6 tie, the Cavs took advantage of a 9-1 run to put the game out of reach as they cruised to a 30-18 win in the fourth contest.


 


Florida State prepares for a three game road trip this week with matches at Wake Forest (Thursday), Duke (Friday) and Miami the following Tuesday.
