The Florida State volleyball team opened the season Friday, August 30th, at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University. In Todd Kress’ debut as Florida State’s seventh head volleyball coach, the Seminoles fell to the Redbirds by a score of 3-0 (30-27, 32-30, 30-24).
In the match, the Seminoles committed 21 hitting errors, 17 service errors and recorded a hitting percentage of .195. Seniors Dawn Hough and Erica Bunch led the Seminoles in hitting percentage with .333. On the night, Hough tallied six kills on 12 attacks and two errors, while Bunch recorded nine kills on 18 attacks and three errors. Junior Aisha Carr performed well in the loss as she scored 10 points and two solo blocks for Florida State.
“The most disappointing part of tonight is that we didn’t play well,” said head coach Todd Kress. “If we play well, we will win.”
The Seminoles scored the first point of game one, but Illinois State came back to score five unanswered points. While Florida State brought the score to within one numerous times during the game, the Redbirds would not surrender the lead as Illinois State defeated the Seminoles by a score of 30-27. As a team, Florida State recorded 14 kills on 34 attacks and committed six errors. Carr lead the way for Florida State as she scored six points and tallied two solo blocks. Kristin Frye also performed well in game one as she scored five points and recorded two digs for the Seminoles.
In game two, the Seminoles got off to a rocky start, but were able to take the lead late. Illinois State fought back to defeat Florida State, 32- 30. The team hit .056 in game two, recording 12 kills on 36 attacks and 10 errors. Frye, Carr, Alex Sevillano and Bunch each scored three points in the loss. Bunch, Carr and Frye led the team in kills as they each recorded three for the Seminoles.
The Seminoles lost the third game of the night by a score of 30-24. In the loss, Florida State, as a team, recorded 17 kills on 43 attacks and had five errors. Bunch scored five points and tallied five kills in the third game loss for the Seminoles. Frye contributed to the Florida State effort as she recorded four points and four kills.
Florida State will return to Redbird Arena on August 31st, when the Seminoles take on the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama at 10:00 a.m. The Crimson Tide defeated Marshall in the first game of the Barker GMC Classic and improved to 1-0 on the season.
