Seminoles Fall To Auburn At NCGA Match Play Championship

The Florida State women’s golf team fell to Auburn, 3-1-1, in the third round of the National Collegiate Golf Coaches’ Match Play Championship and were eliminated from the event with a 1-2 record. The seventh seeded Seminoles thumped 10th seeded Florida, 5-0, in the first round, fell to Duke, 2-1-2, in the second round and lost their final match of the event to Auburn.

Duke and Vanderbilt will play for the championship Sunday as the Blue Devils squeaked by Michigan State while Vanderbilt defeated top seeded Georgia to advance to the finals. Georgia and Michigan State will compete for third place on Sunday. Auburn, LSU, Wake Forest and Florida all remained alive in the consolation bracket and will compete again on Saturday for fifth place.

Florida State senior Kayla Shaul (Cumming, Ga.) was the only Seminole to win her match against Auburn with a 2 and 1 victory over Marissa Milligan. Shaul took the lead on the first hole and led the match wire-to-wire to earn the victory. She won five of the first eight holes to take a commanding five hole lead and won the match 2 and 1.

Senior Jaclyn Burch (Ellisville, Mo.) scored the only other point for the Seminoles in the match as she finished all-square with Margaret Shirley of Auburn in their match. Burch led by one hole for seven of the 18 holes during the match and rallied to square the match after falling behind by one hole with five to play.

In other matches: Nichole Hage of Auburn defeated Caroline Westrup of Florida State, 2 and 1; Candace Schepperle of Auburn defeated Florida State’s Whitney Wright, 4 and 3 and Abigale Schepperle of Auburn defeated Whitney Brummett of Florida State, 6 and 4.

During three matches, the Seminoles had a cumulative individual match record of 7-5-2 and are one eight teams in the event who will finish with a winning individual record for the weekend. The Seminoles will be one of 12 teams to win at least one team match in the event.

The Seminoles open the spring 2007 schedule Feb. 12-14. at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.
