FULLERTON, CALIF. – Following a spectacular victory over No. 1 Arizona State earlier in the day, the Florida State softball team was unable to upset No. 2 Long Beach State as it suffered a 6-2 loss at the Judi Garman Classic. The Seminoles’ record is now 24-10 while the 49ers improve to 22-8.
On the offense, sophomore Robin Ahrberg went 2-for-3 and scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second and would hit an RBI double into right center to bring Whitney Buckmon across the plate. Ahrberg is now hitting .300 this season, ranking fourth on the Seminole squad.
Taking her second loss of the season and the day was senior Tiffany McDonald who entered the game in the top of the fourth when FSU had a 2-1 lead over LBSU. McDonald gave up four hits, five runs (only two earned) and struck out four. Sophomore Terese Gober was the starting pitcher against the 49ers but after giving up two hits, one earned run and walking three of six batters, freshman Sarah Hamilton was called in from the bullpen. Hamilton would throw for just one inning, giving up one hit and walking two.
With a 1-1 record at the tournament, the Seminoles will fight for their first victory against the No. 7/8 Arizona Wildcats at 9:00 a.m. PST on Friday, March 21. Florida State trails the all-time series 6-0 against Arizona. That game will be followed by FSU taking on No. 18/19 Washington at 3:30 p.m. PST.
