Game 4 – UCF 9, Florida State 8
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – UCF’s Jeremy Frost went 2-4 with a game-winning single
RBI to give the Golden Knights a 9-8 win over Florida State in game five of
the Tallahassee Regional on Saturday. UCF improves to 43-17 and will face
the winner of the Florida State/Evansville game at 1:00pm on Sunday. FSU
drops to 46-16 and will play Evansville in the elimination game at 7:00pm.
Florida State led 2-0 after three innings of play. John Halliday continued
his impressive regional play with a two-out RBI single off the right field
wall that drove in Karl Jernigan in the second inning. In the third inning,
John-Ford Griffin doubled to right field and scored on a single by Ryan
UCF’s Matt Bowser tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-run double to
deep right field. The Golden Knights had the bases loaded as Mike Myers
singled, Mark Batia reached on an error by FSU shortstop Brett Groves and
Rich Wallace walked. Myers and Batia scored on Bowser’s hit.
The Golden Knights took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning. UCF loaded the
bases in the sixth off of a base hit and two walks. With one out, FSU
brought in Daniel Hodges to pitch for starter Mike Ziegler. UCF
pinch-hitter Andy Johnson’s infield hit scored one run while Dustin Brisson
hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the second run.
FSU’s Halliday and pinch hitter Pichi Balet reached base with singles in the
seventh and it was UCF’s turn to make a pitching change as Jason Arnold
entered the game with one out. A wild pitch and a walk to Chris Smith
loaded the bases for FSU’s Griffin, who hit his seventh home run of the year
to clear the bases and give the Tribe a 6-4 lead.
The FSU lead was brief as UCF came back to tie the game in the bottom of the
seventh. Hodges retired the first two batters, but then the Golden Knights
rallied. Mike Fox singled down the middle and went to second on a wild
pitch. Jeremy Frost drove in Fox with a double to left field and then he
scored on a single by Greg Good. Mike DiBlasi came into the game and struck
out Brisson to retire the side.
UCF broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. Designated hitter Rich
Wallace started the inning with a single to left field before Mike DiBlasi
struck out two, UCF leftfielder Matt Meath reached after being hit by a
pitch. The Golden Knights took the lead when second baseman Mike Fox hit a
two-run triple to centerfield to give UCF the 9-6 lead.
The Seminoles answered in the ninth inning. Third baseman Pichi Balet led
off with a single, followed by an RBI triple from rightfielder Chris Smith.
Griffin added a single RBI to cut the lead to one. Marshall McDougal reached
on a fielder’s choice and then stole second base but UCF pitcher Justin
Arnold struck out Ryan Barthelemy to give the Golden Knights the 9-8 win.
Arnold took the win for UCF (7-2), recording three strikeouts and giving up
four runs. Starting pitcher Justin Pope went six and a third innings,
striking out three and giving up four runs. Florida State’s Mike DiBlasi
went to 2-1 on the season with the loss, striking out four and giving up
three runs. Seminole starter Mike Ziegler gave up four runs (two earned) and
striking out five in five and a third innings.
