TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Leyla Erkan recorded three wins this weekend before she fell in the championship match in the consolation bracket today at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
After dropping her first match to No.25 Anna Bartenstein from Miami 6-1, 6-1, Erkan surged back and defeated Gen Lorberges from Central Florida 6-3, 6-2 in her first match on Saturday. In her second, she moved on to beat Kate Parker from South Florida at 6-3, 6-2. Yesterday, she bested Florida International’s Karyn Guttormsen 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals before falling in today’s final match against Aline Berekenbrock of North Florida, 6-3, 6-1.
The doubles pair of sophomore Ruth Seaborne and junior Carolina De los Santos made it to the semifinals where they dropped a tough one to the No.20 team of Lauren Herring and Kate Fuller from Georgia 8-5. On the way, they snatched three victories, including one against the No.26 team from Florida of Alex Cercone and Sofie Oyen 8-6.
Freshman Mia Vriens picked up two wins in the main draw of singles at the tournament. In her first match, she beat Tereza Lerova from Georgia State 6-3, 6-1 and then would go on to pass Georgia Tech’s Lynn Blau 6-3, 6-0. She would fall in the quarterfinals against Lauren Herring from Georgia 6-4, 7-5.
The singles and doubles champions from the event will secure automatic berths into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. There are at-large bids that could be made as well.
Next up for the Seminoles in the USF Fall Invitational in Tampa, Fla., which is scheduled for Nov. 4-5.
