NOTRE DAME, Ind. –
Florida State University junior Jonas Blixt finished tied for fifth in the individual standings and the Seminole men’s golf team finished fourth in the team standings as play at the inaugural Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic at the Warren Golf Course came to a conclusion Tuesday. Blixt earned the third top-five individual finish of his career as he carded a five-over par 75 in the final round to finish with a three-round total of 217.
Florida State has now finished in the top four in both of its last two events as the Seminoles finished third at the Shoal Creek Invitational in September.
Lamar led the event from start to finish to claim the team title. The Cardinals carded three of the top four team rounds to win the championship by 29 strokes over Notre Dame. Lamar’s Justin Hardin earned medalist honors despite firing a five-over par 75 in the final round. He finished with a 213 total which stood one stroke better than the runner-up golfers and four strokes better than Florida State’s Blixt.
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) finished the tournament with the sixth-best tournament score of his career (217) after carding an even par 70 in the first round, a two-over par 72 in the second round and a five-over par 75 in the final round. He endured his toughest stretch of golf during the event over the final nine holes as he finished his third round at four-over par. Blixt has now earned two consecutive top-five finishes in the last two events after earning medalist honors at the Shoal Creek Invitational.
Freshman Seath Lauer (Huntington, Ind.) finished tied for 16th in the individual standings in his first career event with a seven-over par 77 in the final round and a 225 total for the 54-hole tournament. He, too, had trouble on the back nine in the final round as he finished the final nine holes of the tournament at seven-over par. Lauer was playing as an individual and his score did not count towards the Seminoles’ final team score.
Sophomore Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) played the second-best round of the day for the Seminoles as he closed with a six-over par 76. He finished tied for 21 in the individual standings to earn the sixth top-20 finish of his 12-event Florida State career. Fellow sophomore Nicholas Smith (Ocala, Fla.) finished tied for 31st in the individual standings with a 230 total for the event. His best round – a two-over par 72 – came in the second round. Freshman Cameron Knight (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and junior Song Jeon (Seoul, Korea) also competed in the event for Florida State.
Florida State plays nest at the Isleworth Intercollegiate in Orlando beginning Oct. 22.
