Seminoles Finish In Fith Place At Cougar Women’s Golf Classic

Sept. 16, 2008

HANAHAN, S.C. –
Florida State senior All-American Caroline Westrup shot a six-under par 66 in the final round and earned her fifth career individual championship as play at the Cougar Classic at Yeaman’s Hall Golf Club came to a close Tuesday afternoon. Westrup led the Seminoles to a fifth place finish in the team standings.

Westrup was three strokes behind the leader after two rounds and finished two strokes in front of the second place finisher, Whiney Neuhauser of Virginia, in the final standings. Westrup tied her career-low score of 66 as she carded six birdies and was never above par during the entire round. In fact she was never above par for the entire tournament as she shot scores of 69-71-66 to finish at a personal best 10-under par with a personal best 206 score for the 54-hole tournament. Westrup’s 206 in 54 holes was also a Cougar Classic record.

Georgia, which was tied for the team lead after the first round and the team leader through the second and third rounds, won the team championship. The Bulldogs defeated Alabama by five strokes despite finishing with their highest single round team score of the event in the third round. Florida State was in eighth place entering the third round and shot a four-under par 284 team score – its best of the event – to earn the top-five team finish in its season-opening event.

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) claimed medalist honors as she played nearly flawless golf over the course of the final 18 holes. She was two-under par after her first six holes; four under after her first 12 holes and finished at six-under par. Westrup birdied her seconds to last hole to move to six-under par and closed her round with a par to finish at 66. She began the day tied for second with Neuhauser and defeated the Cavalier star by two strokes (66-68) to win the title. The victory was Westrup’s first since winning the individual championship at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic during the spring of 2008.

Sophomore Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) finished in a tie for 28th place as she carded her career-best score of one-under par 71 in the final round. She jumped 11 positions in the standings in the final round after carding scores of 73 and 77 in the first two rounds. Silva also played the best round of her Seminole career as she was never above par during the final round. Silva was two-under par after her first two holes; one-under after her first 11 holes and two under after 17 holes. She closed with a bogey on her 18th hole but still finished as one of two Florida State players who finished under par in the third round.

Senior Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) finished the tournament with a one-over par 73 and finished in a tie for 32nd place. She finished the event with a career-best 222 score for the tournament as she earned the fifth best finish of her career. Cousart was never more than two strokes over par in the final round and shot an eagle two on the par four hole No. 1. Her eagle drew her to even with only three holes remaining to be played.

Freshman Hannah Thomson (Perth, Australia) played her best golf of the tournament as she carded a two-over par score of 74. She was even after her first 13 holes and finished in a tie for 47th place. Thomson improved her individual standing by 18 positions in the standings with her play in the final round. Junior Lacey Agnew (Jonesboro, Ga.) carded a 78 in the final round and finished in a tie for 76th place.

“That was a phenomenal individual effort by Caroline Westrup,” said head coach Debbie Dillman. “It was a great performance all around by all of the members of our team. I am really proud of the players who represented Florida State in this tournament. I truly believe that we are beginning to see a glimpse of what could be a great year four our team.”

Florida State continues its three match fall season at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 3-6 at the University of North Carolina’s Finley Golf Course.
