Jan. 21, 2010

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team finished their first weekend of competition with a 19-4 combined record. The team played at the FGCU Invitational in Naples, Fla., competing against Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Atlantic and Illinois. The weekend was capped by No. 27 Jean-Yves Aubone named the Most Outstanding Player by the FGCU Invitational committee.

“I’m excited about the strong results with a number of guys who played well,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Jean-Yves and Vahid didn’t lose. We had a strong showing early and look forward to playing this weekend.”

Aubone, a senior from Miami, defeated No. 43 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday and Marc Abdelnour of Florida Atlantic 6-3, 6-3 to earn the award. No. 111 Vahid Mirzadeh (Wellington, Fla.) had a great tournament as well, winning all of his single matches.

“This was a big win for Jean-Yves and exciting to see two of the better players in the nation playing one another,” Hultquist said. “Nevolo is a much better player then the rankings suggest and one of the better players in the nation.”

The senior teamed up with freshman Connor Smith (Tampa, Fla.) to win 8-2 against Illinois’ Nevolo/Stephen Hoh. Smith won two single matches along with his other freshmen teammates Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) and senior Keith Embree (Naples, Fla.).

Against the USTA Junior National Team, the Seminoles went 5-1 with wins from Aubone, Smith and Mirzadeh in singles. The doubles of No. 31 Mirzadeh/Smith and Aubone/Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) won their respective matches.

The Seminoles have their first home event on Saturday, January 23 at 9am and play again at 3pm. All home events are held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center and admission is free.
