Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Top 40

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State baseball team earned its first preseason ranking of the 2015 campaign as the Seminoles will open the year at No. 11 in Collegiate Baseball’s Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I preseason poll.

The Seminoles welcome back 16 letterwinners including five positions starters and two pitchers that recorded at least six starts from last year’s squad that recorded 43 wins and an eighth consecutive ACC Atlantic Division title. FSU made its 52nd NCAA Tournament appearance and 37th in a row in 2014.

One of those returners for the Seminoles is DJ Stewart who is the reigning ACC Player of the Year. The Yulee, Fla., native finished his sophomore season ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in eight offensive categories while leading in batting average (.351), on-base percentage (.472) and slugging percentage (.557). Stewart concluded the year tied for the team lead with 20 multi-hit games and was second with 13 multi-RBI games. He recorded a career-high four hits three times in 2014, while reaching base in 52 of the 53 games in which he played.

Mike Compton will pace the Seminole pitching staff in 2015. The redshirt junior right hander made 15 starts a season ago and went 7-3 with a 3.23 ERA. Compton struck out 50 batters in 83.2 innings of work.

The Seminoles had eight players selected in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft including Luke Weaver who was selected with the 21st overall pick in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals. With the large number of players that departed after the 2014 season due to graduation and the draft, Florida State welcomes 17 newcomers to the team including five transfers in 2015.

Florida State is one of seven schools from the ACC featured in Collegiate Baseball’s preseason rankings.

The Garnet & Gold will open the 2015 season with a three-game series at home against Oakland University (Michigan) beginning Friday, February 13.
