Seminoles Go Perfect 4-0 With 97-54 Win Over Nice

Aug. 19, 2000

NICE, France – With a 97-54 win over Nice Universite Saturday night, the
Florida State women’s basketball team went a perfect 4-0 for the European
Tour. Sophomores Lauren Bradley and Katelyn Vujas paved the way for the
FSU
victory with 21 and 19 points, respectively. Vujas recorded a
double-double, adding 10 rebounds to her performance.

“After four games in five nights and doing all the things that we did, I
felt like we continued to play extremely hard tonight,” Head Coach Sue
Semrau said. “I don’t think we played our best game by any means, but we
were able to do some nice things in spurts and we have a hunger in us now
that’s going to carry over into our preseason. Obviously we have to be
pleased to go 4-0. We’ve had so much fun during the days and really
packed
a lot in and to step up and perform like we did was what we were hoping we
would see on this tour.”

The Seminoles started the game slow, but began to get into a groove in the
second quarter. Nice scored the game’s first three points, but FSU
responded with six straight of its own. Eight players scored for FSU in
the
first quarter, led by Levys Torres and Vujas with six points apiece, and
the
Tribe led 27-22. In the second quarter, Nice pulled to within a point at
32-31 and kept the game close until Bradley got hot and scored seven of
her
game-high 21 points in the 10-minute stanza. Florida State took a 47-35
lead into halftime.

With better defense and rebounding, the Seminoles increased their lead to
23 in the third quarter. It was Bradley again who paced the squad,
leading
the way with eight points. The final quarter saw a lot of run and gun for
the Tribe. It was fast-paced, very physical and there were a lot of
bodies
hitting the floor, but the Noles pulled out the 43-point victory
relatively
injury-free. Also scoring in double figures were Vanessa Fuchs with 15
and
Torres with 11. Senior Lako Brown led the team with 13 rebounds. Senior
Lakesha Springle had a team-high nine assists while three players tallied
four steals each. FSU shot 43 percent from the field for the game.

The Seminoles will visit Monaco on Sunday and will then return to
Tallahassee Monday night.
