career-hgh 13-game hitting streak.

* Brett Groves is batting .231 (6-for-26) in the last six games but four of
his hits came against Akron on 3/24.

Team Notes

* The Seminoles have not hit a home run in four games, their longest
drought this season. Before the last four games, FSU was averaging 1.68
home runs per game.

* Believe it or not, FSU does not have a sacrifice bunt through 29 games.

* Florida State has not been shutout for 185 consecutive games since a 2-0
loss to Clemson on May 6, 1996. The Seminoles have posted 12 shutouts
against opponents during that time.

* FSU is averaging 11.8 hits per game and have out-hit opponents in 26 of
29 games.

* The Seminole pitching staff’s strikeout to walk ratio is 2.6 to 1.

On the Mound…

* Jon McDonald has held opponents to one or no unearned runs in five of his
eight appearances and has eight or more strikeouts in four appearances.

* Nick Stocks has allowed no more than three runs or six hits in any outing
this year. Stocks has allowed just one earned run in his last 23.1 IP.
He also knows how to close an inning — opponents are batting just .127
against him with two outs. Stocks has 24 strikeouts in his last two starts
and is averaging 10.9 strikeouts per game.

* Blair Varnes has given up just five earned runs in his last six starts
(35.2 IP). Varnes has allowed just three walks in 48.0 IP. His strikeout

* Sophomore LHP Mike Smalley struck out a career-high nine batters in 6.0
IP against Akron on 3/24.

* Freshman RHP Chris Smith is the first position player since Chris Roberts
(1990-92) to also start on the mound. Roberts made 42 starts in his career
as a Seminole before being drafted in the first round by the New York Mets.
Smith struck out five in 5 2/3 innings in his first career win against
Akron on 3/23.

* Mike DiBlasi has struck out the side in four of his 13z appearances and
is averaging 17.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

* Reliever Chris Ginn has given up just one run in his last six appearances
(8.2 IP).

Looking Down the Road…

* FSU’s team batting average of .330 would be the Seminoles best team
batting average since 1986 (.325) if the season ended today.

* The pitching staff’s 10.1 strikeouts per game projects over 700 total
strikeouts for the season (figured on a 70 game season). Only the 1986
pitching staff, which played 84 games, has totaled 700 K’s in a season
(718) in FSU history.

* FSU is on pace to hit over 100 home runs as a team for just the fifth
time in history. The 1997 team was the last to do it with 114, but J.D.
Drew (31) and Jeremy Morris (25) combined for 56 of them.
