Sophomore Brooks Koepka shot a one over par 73 and is in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings and the No. 4 ranked Seminole men’s golf team is in a tie for 12th place after the first round of the 20th Annual Mauna Lani Invitational at the Mauna Lani North Course. The Seminoles shot 306 as a team and are within 10 strokes of moving into the top five in the team standings after the first of three rounds in the high-powered spring season opening tournament.
Calm winds turned gusty as the day progressed creating many challenges for the 22-team field. At the end of the day only six players finished under par. Tied for top honors at two-under-par 70 are Texas Tech’s Nils Floren, Texas’ Bobby Hudson, UCLA’s Alex Kim, Washington’s Nick Taylor and Oregon’s Andrew Vijarro. In sixth place at one-under is Colorado’s Kevin Kring. Five players are tied in 7th place at even-par 72.
UCLA’s even-par 288 has the Bruins in first place in the team standings. Oregon and Washington are tied for second place with scores of three-over par 291. The Seminoles are tied for 12th with UC Davis.
Koepka helped himself with four birdies, an eagle on the par 5 seventh hole and eight of even par golf. He played the front nine at two under par and finished with the back nine at three over par. Koepka has put himself in position to finish well as he is only three strokes behind the group of leaders in a tie for first with identical scores of two under par 70.
The second of three rounds begins at Thursday at 5:30 eastern time.
