April 15, 2005

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
The Florida State women’s golf team is in seventh place with a pair of Seminoles – sophomore Jaclyn Burch and junior Caroline Larsson – in a tie for 17th in the individual standings after the first round of the 17th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at Carmel Country Club. The eight team field played in brisk and breezy conditions with temperatures in the low 60’s and winds gusting as high as 25 miles per hour.

Duke, the nine-time defending champion in the event, holds a nine stroke advantage over second place Wake Forest in the team standings. The No. 1 ranked Blue Devils, who have won seven of the nine events they have played in this year, struggled with the weather as evidenced by their 303 (+15) team score. Mandy Goins of Wake Forest leads the individual standings with a one-over par score of 73. Anna Grzebien of Duke leads three Blue Devils in the top five of the individual standings with a two-over par score of 74. None of the 40 golfers in the event was able to card a score of even par or better.

Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) and Larsson (Danderyd, Sweden) led the Seminoles with identical scores of nine-over par 81. Burch is competing in her second career ACC championship while Larsson is playing in her third. Burch finished in a tie for 28th place and Larsson earned a 16th place finish in the 2004 ACC Championship.

Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.), who is competing in her first ACC Championship, fired a 10-over par 82 in the blustery conditions. Fellow freshman Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) carded an 85. She is also playing in her first ACC Championship. Senior Tyler Johnson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) is also competing for the Seminoles.

The second of three rounds begins Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
