TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Matilda Castren is in a tie for fourth in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team is in ninth place in the team standings with one round remaining to be played in the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships at SouthWood Golf Club. The Seminoles are four strokes out of eighth place as they play to finish among the top eight teams at the end of Saturday’s third round in order to qualify for the NCAA Championship finals at the Tulsa Country Club May 20-24.
12th-ranked and fourth-seed Vanderbilt kept its stranglehold on first place in the team standings with a six stroke lead over second-place Duke. The Commodores increased their lead from three strokes after the first round to six strokes after the second round. Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford is the individual leader with a two-day total of 139. Stackhouse holds a one stroke lead over Sandy Choi and Celine Boutier of Duke.
The Seminoles were led by freshman Lydia Gumm, who totaled a 3-under par score on the back nine as the Seminoles made a charge up the leaderboard over their final nine holes of the day. Florida State played the back nine at four-over par to put itself back into contention for a top eight finish and a trip to the national finals. Gumm finishes with an even par score of 72.

Castren (Espoo, Finland) has put herself in position to advance to the NCAA Championship finals as an individual. She is currently the second highest ranking individual player in the field who is not on one of the top eight teams. She is currently tied for the individual lead with Grace Na of Pepperdine among non-advancing teams.
Castren carded an even par 72 in the second round and has a two-day total of 141. Her 3 under par total for the first 36 holes played has her only two shots behind Stackhouse in the race the individual championship. Castren is bidding to become on the second individual regional champion in school history. Maria Salinas finished in a tie for first place in the 2010 NCAA Central Regional championship.
Castren played her best golf in the middle of the round as she was 3 under par with three birdies and three holes scored at par on hole No. 7 though hole No. 12. She was 1 stroke under par over her final 12 holes of the afternoon and was never above par during the round. She has a team leading eight birdies through the first two rounds of the championship.
Gumm (Radcliff, Ky.) was on fire after she made her turn to the back nine. She finished with an even par score of 72 (one stroke off of her career best score of 71). She carded four birdies in a span of seven holes (10 through 16) and to from three over par to one under par with two holes reaming in the round.
Gumm has a career-best two-day (36 holes) total of 147 with scores of 75 and 72 in the first two rounds.
Junior Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) played her best round of the event with a two over par score of 74. She, too, played her best golf of the round on the back nine with three birdies and an even par total. She closed the round well with two birdies on her final three holes to finish a 2 over par for the round. She improved her score by five strokes as compared to her first round score of 79.
Florida State will tee off from hole No. 1 at 7:45 a.m. and will play with NC State and Campbell in the final round. The Wolfpack (seventh place) and the Camels (eighth place) are five strokes and four strokes, respectively, ahead of the Seminoles. Florida State is two strokes ahead of 10th-place Pepperdine and three strokes ahead of 11th-place Texas State.
