TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
University of Georgia sophomore Rocio Sanchez Lobato carded a 6 under par 66 and is in first place in the individual standings and the Bulldogs are in first place in the team standings after the first round of the inaugural Florida State Match-Up Women’s Golf Tournament at SouthWood Golf Club. Sanchez Lobato was one of four golfers who broke par in the first of three rounds played on a picturesque day in the state capital of Florida.
Sanchez Lobato was never above par and was as many as 8 strokes under par before a double bogey on her next to last hole of the round (hole No. 17) moved her score to six under par. She closed the round with a score of par on hole No. 18 to finish with her career best score of 66. Sanchez Lobato was followed by teammate Manuela Carbajo Re who is in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings with an individual score of 72.
Georgia was followed by Tennessee (one stroke back) and the host team Florida State (five strokes back) and Furman (five strokes back) in the team standings. The Bulldogs (Sanchez Lobato and Carbajo Re), the Lady Vols (Erica Popson and Chessey Thomas), Seminoles (Olivia Hullert and Jessica Negron) and Lady Paladins all have two players in the top five of the individual standings.
Tennessee was led by Popson who carded a 2 under par score of 70; she is in third place in the individual standings and only four strokes behind Sanchez Lobato. Thomas carded an even par score of 72 and is included in a group of seven players who will all begin play in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings.
Florida State was led by Hullert – a freshman – and Negron – a senior – who both carded even par scores of 72. Neither Hullert nor Negron was more than one stroke over par during the round with both golfers carding two birdies, two bogeys and 14 holes at par or better. Hullert and Negron are both in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings.
Furman is tied with Florida State for third place in the team standings. The Lady Paladins are led by Laura Wearn and Aubrie Street. Wearn shot a three under par score of 69 while Street is part of the group tied for fifth place with an even par score of 72.
The unique format of this event has each of the 12 participating teams paired with another team and playing with that common opponent over the first two days of the event. The match-up of Georgia and Oklahoma are in first place in the match-up standings with a two-team total of 366. The tandems of Florida State/Texas A&M and Tennessee/Texas San Antonio are tied for second with scores of 368.
The event winner (both team and individual ) will be determined in the normal way with the team and individual at the top of the leaderboards after three rounds being crowned the tournament champions.
