Seminoles In Tie For 5th At Bryan National Collegiate

April 6, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State was a combined 4-over par on the back nine and moved into a tie for fifth place in the team standings after the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate on the Players Course at the Bryan Park Center. The Seminoles made a move up the team leaderboard after falling to as low as 13th place during the early part of the first round. The Seminoles are only seven strokes behind Northwestern – the team leader — after the first of three rounds of the three-day tournament.

Seminole junior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) is in a tie for eighth place and is the Seminoles’ leader in the individual standings. Negron is only two strokes behind Katie Burnett of South Carolina who leads the 93-player field with a 2 under par score of 70. Only 12 of the 93 golfers playing in the event finished with scores of par or better in the first round.

Florida State is the second highest placing ACC team in the 17-team field after the first round of play. The Seminoles are two strokes behind Wake Forest, one stroke ahead of Duke, two strokes ahead of Virginia, four strokes ahead of North Carolina and nine strokes ahead of NC State. This event is very much a tune-up for next weekend’s ACC Championship which will be played only just over 15 miles away at the Sedgefield Country Club which is also in Greensboro.

“The girls did a good job of battling the elements today,” said head coach Amy Bond. “It was extremely cold this morning and got windy this afternoon. They hit come good, quality shots and managed their games well. There are still opportunities to grow but overall I am happy with how we played today.”

Negron carded her second consecutive round of 72 or better with her even par performance in Friday’s first round. She carded a team high five birdies. She was 1 under par with three birdies on the front nine and 1 over par with two birdies on the back nine. She was a big part of the Seminoles’ late round comeback as she was 1 under par with two birdies on her last five holes.

Negron was Florida State’s second leading finisher at last weekend’s Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia. She is a total of 1 stroke under par in her last two rounds with scores of 71 and 72

“My ball stroking was really good which gave me multiple looks at birdies today,” said Negron. “I got in trouble on one hole (double bogey on the par four hole No. 6) but other than that I was relatively comfortable. We are all looking forward to tomorrow and getting out to a much better start.”

Freshman Laure Castelain (Bordeaux, France) continued to play well as she carded a two over par 74 and is in a tie for 22nd place. She was at her best on the back nine with a 1 over par score including an even par total over her final eight holes of the round. Castelain carded 13 holes at par or better with three birdies.

Castelain is looking for her third consecutive top 25 individual finish – she finished in a tie for 12th place at the Lady Gator Invitational and in a tie for 23rd place at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic.

Freshman Carlton Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) carded a 3 over par score of 75 with 14 holes at par or better and senior Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru) finished the first round with a 4 over par 76. Kuhlo is in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings while Salinas is in a tie for 39th place.

The Seminoles, who are ranked No. 32 nationally, are ahead of No. 10 ranked Duke (seventh place), No. 25 ranked Virginia (eighth place), No. 6 North Carolina (ninth place), No. 21 NC State (tied for 11th), and No. 24 Michigan State (tied for 14th) with two rounds of golf remaining to be played.

Florida State will play with Wake Forest and Ohio State from the first tee at 9:05 a.m. on Saturday in the second round of the tournament.
