June 10, 2008

Tallahassee, Fla.- Florida State sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone has been named to the USTA Summer Collegiate Team, an honor reserved for the six highest ranked American players in college tennis.

“I think it is a great honor for him to make that team,” FSU head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “There are only six guys on the team and they are all top 20 guys in the country. They’ve all had outstanding careers so I think it is a great opportunity for him to get some great experience, have some more coaching and I am really proud of him making it.”

The USTA Summer Collegiate Team is an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players that began in 1996 and is funded by the USTA. It is designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer months.

“The team will travel around playing tournaments together during the summer,” Hultquist said. “He receives coaching at those tournaments and will receive wild cards into some of those tournaments. To be named to a national team is a great thing and we are really proud of what he’s done.”

Aubone finished the season ranked 19th in singles and 20th in doubles and was one of 11 players to be ranked in the top 20 in both. His No. 13 singles ranking to begin the NCAA Tournament earned Aubone All-American honors for just the second time in school history. The Miami, Fla. native was also a member of the All-ACC team and had a combined 50 wins in singles and doubles action.

The top four American players from the season-ending ITA national singles rankings are eligible for automatic selections, while the remaining two players on each team are selected by USTA Player Development. In 2008, all six players on the team finished the season ranked inside the Top 20 in the final rankings and earned All-American honors. The other five players are Florida’s Greg Ouelette, Georgia’s Travis Helgeson and Nate Schnugg, Stanford’s Alex Clayton and Ohio State’s Justin Kronauge.

Current pros who are past participants on the USTA Summer Collegiate Team include James Blake, Bob and Mike Bryan, Audra Cohen, Amer Delic, Laura Granville, John Isner, Jesse Levine, Todd Paul, Sam Warburg and Jesse Witten.
