ESTERO, Fla. –After playing 36 holes on Monday, the No. 1 Florida State men’s golf team leads the Homewood/Hilton Garden Airport & FGCU Classic at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club. The Seminoles conclude the tournament Tuesday as they tee off at 8:30 a.m.
With a 2-over 578 on the first day, Florida State has an eight stroke lead over second place Florida and a 15 stroke lead over third place Loyola (Md.). All five Seminoles are in the top 20 of the individual standings.
“This is a very difficult golf course,” said head coach Trey Jones. “You have to drive the ball well to have any chance of playing well. A ball off the fairway is likely lost or unplayable. The green designs are equally demanding. You have to pay attention to the slopes and execute a solid iron shot.”
Aiming for his second top ten finish of the year is sophomore Josh Lee who is tied for first place after carding a two-under 142. He is tied with AJ Crouch of Florida and Jeremy Wall of Loyola (Md.).
“Josh played beautifully today from tee to green,” continued Jones. “He is as good a driver of the ball as there is in college golf and that is mandatory out here. I am proud he has the lead and look forward to seeing how he handles that tomorrow.”
Lee and Lebioda are currently leading the tournament with 11 birdies a piece while Maguire leads the field in par five scoring at 6-under.
“As a team we made too many big numbers and didn’t execute on the par fives at times,” concluded Jones. “We are looking forward to finishing this fall season with a solid team round tomorrow.”
