May 14, 2009

Florida State Senior All-American Matt Savage is in a tie for third place in the individual standings after shooting a five under par score of 66 and the Seminole men’s golf team is in fifth place in the team standings after the first round of the NCAA Division I men’s golf regional championship at the Red Tail Golf Club. The Seminoles had all five of its golfers finish at or under par and they combined to card a 277 team score – tied for their best single round score of the year. The Seminoles are nine strokes behind the overall team leader — UCF — who blistered the course with a 268 team total.

The Seminoles, who are competing in their fourth consecutive NCAA regional championship, need to finish as one of the top five teams in the event to advance to the NCAA Championships which are scheduled to May 27-30 at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo, Ohio.

No. 23 ranked Central Florida, the host team, is in first place in the team standings after the first round. The Knights are two strokes ahead of Arizona. Tarquin McManus of Arizona shot an eight under par 63 and is the first round individual leader.

Savage was brilliant throughout the round and is in a tie for third place with his six under par score of 66. He led the Seminoles with an eagle (on hole 12 – a par 5), six birdies and seven holes at par. After earning even par score on his first two holes, Savage eagled his third hole and birdied four of his next six holes to finish his first nine holes at six under par. He finished his second set of nine holes with two birdies and three bogeys to finish the round at five under par.

Savage has a history of strong play in NCAA regional championships. He carded a 65 in the third round of the 2006 NCAA East Regional championship and 70 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA East Regional championship. Savage carded a school record nine-under par 63 in the second round of the Florida State Spring Break Invitational on March 12, 2009.

“That was a big round for Matt’s confidence,” said head coach Trey Jones. “Brooks played solid golf today and I am confident that he will get it going tomorrow. We need to come out aggressively tomorrow and play a good round. Even par won’t get you much in this event.”

Freshman Brooks Koepka, the only member of the Seminoles’ line-up playing in his first NCAA regional championship, carded a two-under par 69 and is in tie for 14th in the individual standings. He was nearly flawless during the entire round with two birdies and 16 holes of par. Koepka carded a birdie on his third hole and remained under par for the remainder of the round. He birdied his 15th hole of the afternoon to move to two under and that’s where he finished.

Koepka is Florida State’s hottest player with two consecutive scores of 69 and only one round over par in his last two tournaments.

Three Seminoles – Drew Kittleson, Cameron Knight and Seath Lauer – are tied for 30th in the individual standings with identical scores of even par 71.

Kittleson took the most adventurous route to his score of 71 in the first round. He was two over par after carding a double bogey on his 14th hole of the day. He proceeded to earn birdies on two of his final four holes including the par four ninth hole to finish at even par. Kittleson earned four birdies on the afternoon and was never more than two strokes over par.

Knight played well on his first nine with three birdies and a two-under par total before making the turn. He finished a two over par with three bogeys and only one birdie to finish with his even par score of 71. The even par score was his second even par score in his last three rounds after carding an even pr score of 72 in the second round of the ACC Championship on April 18.

Lauer played both sides of the course consistently with even par scores on his front and back nine. He carded two birdies and two bogeys on both sides of the course. Lauer has now carded four consecutive scores of 74 or better with two of his last three coming in at even par.

The Seminoles are paired with Charlotte and Kentucky I the third round and will tee off beginning at 8:50 Friday morning.
