Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State women’s tennis squad (11-4) opened the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its schedule with a win over No. 50 Maryland. The Seminoles took two of three doubles matches and four singles matches from the host Terps in a 5-2 contest in College Park, MD.
FSU won at the number one and three positions to begin the late morning match. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and newcomer Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) posted an 8-6 win against 46th-ranked Marianne Baker and Emily Marker in the number one slot. The Seminoles senior tandem of Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) and Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bredenton) won in the third spot 9-8, over Andrea Fusea and Neda Mihneva to clinch the doubles victory.
In singles action, Moldovan extended her singles winning streak to 15 with a victory over No. 71 Emily Marker. Moldovan lost to Marker in fall action at the ITA Riviera All-American tournament. Moldovan, currently ranked 74th in the country, tied her season-high in singles wins in the contest today. The reigning ITA South Region Rookie of the Year posted a 15-5 record in 2003, playing out of the number one and two positions.
Denny posted her 12th win of the season besting Baker at the three spot, 6-3, 6-1 while Clarke bested Fusea in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Junior Amberly Tantee (Dana Point, CA/Futures) posted the fifth and final point against Masha Senic 7-6(5), 6-4.
Senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) lost against No. 66 Ramona But 7-5, 6-3 while sophomore Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) dropped the match at the number four position to Jennifer Dent 7-5, 6-1.
Florida State heads to Virginia tomorrow to face the Cavaliers on Sunday, March 14 at 11:00 a.m.
