Seminoles Out of College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. — Second baseman Scott Redfox’ three-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie as Long Beach State handed a season-ending 7-4 loss to Florida State in the College World Series.

The 49ers’ Darren Merrill (7-0) pitched two scoreless and hitless innings of relief as he held off the Seminoles. Merill struck one and walked one in the outing.

Right-hander John Bentley (7-2) took the loss after surrendering the home run to Redfox. Bentley gave up three runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Rightfielder Matt Diaz belted his 22nd home run of the season in the fourth inning as FSU took a 4-0 lead. Long Beach cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by first baseman Justin Yount and tied the game on a two-run single by designated hitter Mike Hota in the fifth inning.

The Seminoles finished the season with a 53-20 record after their 16th College World Series appearance. Long Beach (42-22-1) will play Miami on June 2nd at 2:30 p.m.
