Sept. 10, 2003

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
Florida State University men’s basketball player Tim Pickett is featured on the cover of Athlon Magazine’s 2003-04 men’s basketball preview issue with a sub-headline reading – Excitement Returns to FSU. The Seminoles are featured with two pre-season All-ACC selections, the pre-season ACC defensive player of the year and a pair of top 25 recruits on the roster for the upcoming season.

Pickett is a pre-season All-ACC second team selection and the pick as the best defensive player in the ACC. He was a second-team All-ACC selection and was selected as a member of the league’s all-defensive team last year as he averaged 17.1 points per game and led the ACC in steals with 82.

Junior Anthony Richardson is a pre-season All-ACC third team selection giving the Seminoles two players on the three pre-season All-Conference teams. Richardson was ranked in the top-20 of five different ACC statistical categories as a sophomore as he averaged 12.1 points per game.

The Seminoles are the pre-season no. 6 pick in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The magazine’s rundown of the ACC goes like this – Duke, North Carolina, Maryland, NC State, Wake Forest, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Clemson. The rundown says “Florida State could make the biggest ACC jump behind one of the nation’s best recruiting classes.”

The magazine rated the Seminoles’ recruiting class as the best in the ACC and one of the best in the nation. Its take on the Seminoles recruiting class is: “Von Wafer and Alex Johnson will help Florida State climb the ACC ladder.” Wafer and Johnson were also rated as two of the top 25 incoming collegiate players in the nation.

The magazine picks the Seminoles as an NIT bound team meaning they believe Florida State will certainly make it first post season appearance since 1998. The Connecticut Huskies are picked as the favorite to win the national championship while the Michigan State Spartans are picked as the national runners-up.

The magazine is available on newsstands now.
