Seminoles Play Host To Florida And Miami; Iowa In ACC/Big Ten Challenge And Defending National Champion Maryland

Aug. 14, 2002

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State men’s basketball team will play host to Florida and Miami, Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, national champion Maryland and travel to play in the Fiesta Bowl Classic Tournament hosted by the University of Arizona as first-year head coach Leonard Hamilton released the Seminoles’ 2002-03 schedule Wednesday.

The Seminoles are scheduled to play 13 games against teams who played in last year’s NCAA Tournament and three more against teams who played in the NIT. Headlined by defending national champion Maryland, eight teams who advanced to last year’s post-season will come to Tallahassee to play at the Leon County Civic Center. Florida State’s appearance in the Fiesta Bowl Classic includes NCAA Tournament teams Davidson, Boston University and Arizona. The Seminoles will face B.U. in the first round of the event and either Davidson or Arizona in the second round of the four-team tournament.

Florida State will play a school-record trying 16 regular season home games beginning with its season opener against Savannah State Nov. 24. The Seminoles will play each of their first eight regular season games at home before traveling for the first time to play Boston University in the opening round of the Fiesta Bowl Classic Tournament Dec. 28.

Florida State opens Atlantic Coast Conference action as it plays host to North Carolina Dec. 22. It marks the second consecutive season and fifth time in school history the Seminoles will play a conference game during the month of December.

Florida State plays host to Maryland Feb. 12 after traveling to play the Terps Jan. 11 in its first ACC road game of the season. In addition, the Seminoles host Duke (Feb. 2) in its first game in the Leon County Civic Center since Florida State defeated the No. 1 ranked Blue Devils Jan. 6 of last season. The dates against Duke and Maryland give the Seminoles two games against the last two national champions. Hamilton’s team will also play host to NCAA Tournament teams Florida (Dec. 6), Miami (Dec. 8), NC State (Jan. 18) and Wake Forest (Feb. 26). In addition, the Seminoles play host to Virginia (March 1) and Iowa (Dec. 2) — a pair of teams that played in the NIT last season.

The Seminoles play host to Iowa in the fourth annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Dec. 2 in Tallahassee. Florida State last played Iowa during the 1988 NCAA Tournament.

The Seminoles are scheduled to face three teams from the state of Florida (Stetson, Miami and Florida) during the first month of the season. It marks the 54th time in 55 seasons the Seminoles will play at least three teams from the Sunshine State. The only season Florida State did not play at least three teams from the state of Florida was the 2001-02 season when the Seminoles played only Florida and South Florida.

Florida State is scheduled to play three teams from the state of Georgia (Savannah State, Mercer and Georgia Tech). Florida State has not played three different teams from Georgia since the 1962-63 season when the Seminoles played Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech and Valdosta State. Florida State was 5-2 against the Peach State teams with two wins over Valdosta State, two over Georgia, one over Georgia Southern;

In its final non-conference home game of the season, Florida State plays host to Texas A&M Corpus Christi Jan. 6. It will mark only the sixth team from the state of Texas the Seminoles have ever faced. The last time the Seminoles played a team from the state of Texas was March 15, 1998 during the NCAA Tournament when the Seminoles defeated Texas Christian, 96-87, to advance to the second round of the tournament.
