SETTING THE SCENE
Florida State, who has defeated Duke and North Carolina in the same season for the first time in school history, travels to play Virginia in its third ACC road game of the season. The Seminoles defeated North Carolina, 81-71, Wednesday night in Tallahassee to remain undefeated at home in ACC games. Florida State defeated No. 1 ranked and previously undefeated Duke, 77-76, Jan. 6 also in Tallahassee. Florida State has won five of its last six games and is 3-1 during the month of January. Following Sunday’s game against Virginia, the Seminoles play host to Clemson Thursday night at the Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center.
CUMMINGS CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE NATION’S HOTTEST PLAYERS
All-ACC candidate Monte Cummings, who is one of the nation’s hottest players, has scored in double figures in a career-high nine consecutive games and is averaging 18.9 points per game since Dec. 16, 2001. He scored his career-high of 28 points against Cleveland State Dec. 19, has scored at least 20 points five times and is averaging 18.8 points in four ACC games during the span. In addition, he has shot 50 percent or better from the field in eight games during the streak, is averaging 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals while averaging 31.7 minutes per game during the span.
ARRINGTON REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Senior point guard Delvon Arrington, an All-ACC candidate, scored his 1000th career point on a free throw in the second half of Florida State’s victory over North Carolina Wednesday night in Tallahassee. He became the 34th player in school history to reach the 1000-point plateau and enters Sunday’s game with 1,004 career points. Arrington needs 13 points to move past Wayne Smalls (1,016 career points, 1974-77) and move into 33rd place on Florida State’s all-time career scoring list.
SEMINOLES IN NATION’S TOP 20
Florida State is ranked 19th in the nation and first in the ACC in rebounding margin in this week’s NCAA statistics. The Seminoles enter Sunday’s game against Virginia with +8.7 rebounding margin.
