DAYTON, Ohio – Florida State volleyball took out Niagara 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) in the first match of its month-long road campaign at the Raider Challenge on Friday, Sept. 12. The Seminoles improve to 6-2 while the Purple Eagles slip further back to 0-7.

“This is our first road trip, first road match, and I think we really played like it,” Seminole head coach Chris Poole said. “We didn’t play as confident as we had been at home, but I think that’s real typical in this kind of situation. We are learning now how to overcome the obstacle of the travel.”

The Seminoles struggled to get going in their groove early on in the first set, but eventually took the win, holing Niagara to 21 points. A low set statistically for FSU, junior Brianna Barry topped the team with five kills with sophomore Lauren Richardson just one behind with four as they went up 1-0 on the Purple Eagles.

In set two, the Garnet and Gold once again got off to a sluggish start, allowing Niagara to go up 5-0 before a NU service error put the Noles on the board. FSU took the upper hand at point 10 and held the advantage the rest of the way, taking the set 25-22.

Florida State played its best set in what would be the final of the match, putting 19 kills on the floor and outscoring the Purple Eagles 21 to 16. Richardson led the team with 11 kills on the evening while Barry’s .444 attack percentage was also a team high. Seeing significant playing time tonight was Ohio native and freshman Abby Niekamp who led her team with three block assists and also notched six kills and two digs.

Overall, the Seminoles led its opponent with 44 kills to 37, 58 digs to 56 43 assists to 34 and 49 points to 45.4.

“We’re certainly very happy to get the win and hopefully we’ll come back and just play a little sharper tomorrow,” Poole said. “Both Wright State and Morehead State are very good defensively, so we’re going to have to really crank our offense up and be ready to go.”

Florida State will face-off with Morehead State first at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday before taking on tournament host Wright State at 7:00 p.m. Live stats will be available on for all matches by visiting the volleyball page and clicking on schedule.
