Seminoles Ready For Weekend Homestand

Feb. 14, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –  After a short break in competition, the No. 27 – ranked Florida State women’s tennis team will take the courts this weekend for a pair of home matches. The Seminoles will host UCF at 3 p.m. on Friday before playing No. 61-ranked Georgia State on Sunday at 1 p.m at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.

“We don’t usually get a lot of breaks during the spring season,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “It’s nice to give the girls a little bit of a breather and get on top of their studies, but I know they’re excited. It feels like this is our first home match because we haven’t been outside yet and we haven’t been at home in almost a month. We’re excited to get going.”

UCF comes to town boasting a 5-1 record this season after grabbing a pair of 5-2 victories at home against Troy and Furman, while Georgia State is 2-3.  The Seminoles are perfect in the all-time series with both teams, holding a 7-0 edge over the Knights and a 6-0 margin against the Panthers.

“Winning at home is huge,” Hyde said. “We have two good teams in UCF and Georgia State, both of which are just off the radar. They’re both in there and they’re going to be great competition this weekend.”

The Seminoles are coming off a big 6-1 victory against USF in Tampa on Feb. 2, moving to 4-1 on the year.  During the win, sophomore Daneika Borthwick grabbed two ranked wins on the day.  Borthwick teamed up with Kerrie Cartwright to defeat the 50th ranked team of Katie Vasenina and Loreta Alonso, 8-4 in doubles, before upsetting No. 35 Vasenina in singles 6-4, 6-4.  For her efforts, Borthwick was named ACC Player of the Week before climbing two spots in the singles rankings to No. 35.

These two matches will mark the home debut for Borthwick.

“I’m so excited,” Borthwick said. “Sitting in the stands last year and seeing that the atmosphere is great. There’s just a difference when you’re at home, knowing that everyone is behind you.”
