February 3, 1999
Tallahassee, FL — Florida State University released Wednesday a list of 12 prospects who have signed letters-of-intent to play football for the Seminoles. Included in the list are two players (Kevin Emanuel and Corey Whitaker) who have already enrolled at Florida State this spring. Their scholarships do not count against this signing class, but are recorded under the 1998 group of signees.
“This was the most intriguing recruiting season I can remember in a long time,” said FSU head coach Bobby Bowden. “The reason being that we had such few numbers, weve never had so few to sign. I had more than this at Howard College. We have 74 guys coming back out of 85 and it just didnt leave you much. So I didnt know what we would do.
“Three days ago I said we are not gonna have but six. Thats what happens when you go after the best. When you go after the best, which nearly all of these are, they wont commit quickly. Meanwhile other good ones are getting away, because you are not willing to commit to them.
“We had told our coaches to recruit for 1999 and 2000 because we dont have many needs this year. Its hard to convince these kids to come to Florida State when you cant show they can play immediately, so the ones who signed were brave.
“I sure want to applaud John Lilly and our staff and what they did. I would have panicked a lot sooner than they did and I would have said go grab so and so, go sign or we are not gonna have enough, and they wouldnt do it. They just stood by their guns.
“This is a heck of a quality class. You know we always rank high in our recruiting here. I dont know how this will rank. Numbers could destroy us because their aint many out there. First time I could remember in a long time we couldnt even sign a football team. We only had 11 scholarships, for a team we need 22. Quality wise this will be mighty hard to beat.”
