Seminoles Remain Undefeated After Weekend Spring Invitational

Jan. 28, 2007

Tallahassee, Fla. –
Florida State men’s tennis continued to play strong Sunday morning with a victory over the Georgia State Panthers, improving the overall season record to 4-0. Doubles play took place on Saturday afternoon where the Seminoles won two straight doubles matches over the Panthers to clinch a first team point.

Overnight showers forced the singles competition to begin late at 11:00 a.m in order to dry the Scott Speicher Tennis Center courts. Senior Jonathas Sucupira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was first to finish in an energetic defeat over GSU’s Andres Arango 6-3, 6-4 while the only Georgia State victory occurred on center court as senior Ytai Abougzir fell to the Panther’s Martin Stiegwardt 4-6, 6-7 (6). Freshman Bradley Mixson on court six had a quick victory over Georgia State’s Augusta Alvarado 6-3, 6-1 while at the same time, court number five sealed the final decision as sophomore Chris Cloer came back in the third set to defeat the Panther’s Anze Cevka 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Unfinished matches included sophomore Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) in the number three position against Georgia State’s Mattias Skold 4-6, 6-2, 3-0 and on court two freshman Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) split sets with the Panther’s Nejc Podkrajsek 3-6, 7-5, 5-2.

“I think the team started slow this morning,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “I think part of it was the weather delay and part of it was playing doubles yesterday. Those were all things we had to adjust to so we got down but I like how we responded.”

Later on Sunday, the Seminoles took on their final opponent of the weekend against Furman University under the leadership of former Seminole head coach Paul Scarpa. In doubles competition, the Seminoles took the first match on center court as rookie-veteran team Ytai Abougzir and Jean-Yves Aubone overcame Furman’s Ryan Friend and Andy Subczyk 8-4. In court two, sophomore team Andrew Bailey and Maciek Sykut were quickly defeated by the Paladin’s Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook 8-2 to tie the doubles score leaving court number three with the deciding match. Senior Jonathas Sucupira and freshman Bradley Mixson stepped up to the pressure to overcome Furman’s Andy Juc and Scott Kahler 8-5. This sealed the deal for the Seminoles going in to singles play with a 1-0 lead.

“I thought Brad and Jonathas had really good chemistry playing together,” coach Hultquist said. “They really never played together until Sam got hurt and they seem to have confidence in each other. I feel pretty good how they came around even though they could have closed it out earlier but I think they did a pretty good job.”

First to complete singles competition came from court number two as Abougzir defeated Furman’s Andy Sobczyk 6-1, 6-2 while Mixson defeated the Paladin’s Mike Kociecki 6-1, 6-4 in the number six position. Victory came for the Seminoles on court three as Sucupira defeated Furman’s Daniel Knause 6-1, 6-1 while one court over, Sykut defeated the Paladin’s Jordan Walters 7-5, 6-1 in position four. Matches to go unfinished occurred on court number one with Aubone taking on Furman’s Andy Juc 6-4, 2-1 and on court six Chris Cloer ended the match with the Paladin’s Chris Gilli at 6-4, 2-2.

“My goal was to be 5-0 at this stage and I think our next stage is going to be a very difficult one,” coach Hultquist said. “We play Notre Dame who’s ranked 13 in the nation and Ohio State who’s No. 3 and then follow up with Florida who’s 17 and then Miami who’s 11. That’s a difficult stretch for us and we’ll need to play real well.”

Next week Florida State men’s tennis hits the road taking on No. 13 Notre Dame on February 2 and No. 3 ranked Ohio State February 4.
