Seminoles Roll In Doubleheader

Feb. 22, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –After two weeks off the courts, the Florida State men’s tennis team (11-2, 1-0) won two matches on Saturday including their first ACC match of the year. The team topped Georgia Tech (6-2, 0-1) 6-1 in the afternoon and followed up with a 7-0 win over FAU (5-6) in the evening.

With 12 singles matches played, the Seminoles lost only four sets today and lost only one match.

“It was great to get two wins today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “I was really pleased with how we came out and won without playing for two weeks. It was important to get the doubles point against Georgia Tech because they are traditionally strong in doubles. Today’s win was a good beginning to our conference play.”

Against Georgia Tech, the team came out in doubles with No. 51 Dominic Cotrone and Blake Davis getting an upset over No. 15 Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura. Sophomore Marco Nunez and freshman Grayson Goldin also got a win on the day over Nathan Rakitt and Casey Kay on court two. Both courts battled back and forth during the matches but Florida State came out with an 8-6 win on each court.

“Blake and I came out strong but it was hard to get momentum because of their strong serve,” said Cotrone. “We had to make sure we remained patient and focused long enough to start controlling their serves. We knew they were going to be a good team and wouldn’t give up at all. Eventually we started to pick up on their tactics and weaknesses and were able to break back and gain control of the match to win.”

In singles play, the Seminoles started strong winning each first set. No. 112 Cotrone came off the courts first with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rakitt. Nunez came off the courts next for the Seminoles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kay on court four.

No. 98 Cristian Gonzalez Mendez clinched the match for the Seminoles winning 6-4, 6-3 against Segura on court three. Goldin won his match 6-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) while Davis won on court two over Benito 6-2, 6-7 (8), 1-0 (10-11).

Florida State mixed up with doubles line-up against FAU Cotrone teamed up with sophomore Michael Rinaldi on court two and quickly came off with an 8-1 win over Richard Meade and Stefan Burnett. Nunez and Goldin bounced up to the top court and came away with an 8-3 triumph over Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff and Will Neuner to clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, the team proceeded to win all six matches in straight sets. Joining the line-up was sophomore João Gauer on court six. Gauer proceeded to clinch the match for the Seminoles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court six.

“Tonight I loved the energy that was brought out by Dominic and Michael in doubles,” continued Hultquist. “They came off the courts quickly and then had Marco and Grayson win one for us. We played sharp tonight and now we look forward to going down to Gainesville on Wednesday.”

The Seminoles travel to Gainesville Wednesday to play the Gators and return home Saturday to take on USF. Check back to Seminoles.com for all your information on the men’s tennis team and follow the team at twitter.com/fsu_mtennis.
