TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –Florida State shutout Appalachian State, 6-0, in the first home game of the season on day one of the Sunshine Classic at JoAnne Graf Field Friday afternoon. The Seminoles extend the winning streak to five and are currently 6-1 to start the year while the Mountaineers drop to 0-2.
Sophomore Terese Gober is now a picture-perfect 5-0 after picking up her fifth win and striking out eight, giving up five hits and walking three Mountaineers. Credited with the loss was Kayla Richardson who gave up eight hits, four earned runs and managed to strike out just one Noles.
Sophomore Kristie McConn led the Garnet and Gold on offense, going 3-for-3 with a season-high three RBI. The second baseman is now hitting at .316 as she recorded her second multiple-hit game this year.
Florida State was up 2-0 on Appalachian State after four and would score two more in the six as an onslaught of Seminole batters loaded the bases and forced the Mountaineers to make a pitching change after scoring two to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Noles scored the final two runs of the game in the seventh after ACC Player of the Week Kaleigh Rafter reached third with her first triple of the season. The starting catcher would score on an RBI single from sophomore Ashley Stager who would score the sixth run thanks to sacrifice fly to right field from McConn.
Going 1-for-3, Rafter keeps her seven-game hitting streak alive to improve her batting average to .520. The redshirt senior also matched her career high for putouts with 11.
Redshirt senior Jessica Gilmore and sophomore Mallory Borden each went 2-for-4 and scored two runs, while Gilmore drove in one.
Rounding out the hits for Florida State were juniors Carly Wynn and Monica Montez and sophomore Ashley Stager, each putting one on the board.
