TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team has signed Terrance and Terrell Whitehurst as the only two members of its 2014-15 signing class. The brothers who are from Tallahassee, will begin playing for the Seminoles in January.
“These two players are two of the most competitive, hard-working athletes we have recruited in my time at Florida State,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “They are two of the three best singles players in the state at the high school level. We are excited they stayed in Tallahassee and expect local excitement to be strong with the two of them joining the Seminole family.”
Terrance was rated a Blue Chip recruit and ranked No. 1 in the state of Florida and as high as No. 14 nationally by TennisRecruiting.net and the USTA. He brings a strong baseline game and expects to contend for starting time during the spring dual schedule.
Terrell was rated a five-star recruit and was ranked as high as No. 3 in Florida and No. 63 nationally from TennisRecruiting.net. Coaches say his greatest strength is his firepower and serve velocity to go along with his competitive spirit.
As a doubles team, the pair has been the No. 1 ranked boys team in Florida and reached the semifinals of the USTA Boys’ National Championships in 2012. They also won the USTA Florida 18U Tournament in 2012 when they were just 16 years old.
“Both Terrance and Terrell are physically strong and imposing on the court,” associate coach Nick Crowell said. “They have developed both their bodies and their games over the past few years for the physicality of college tennis. When you combine their strength with their experience and competitiveness on the court, you get two athletes that are primed for success at FSU and in the future.”
The brothers completed high school at the Florida Virtual School.
Terrance and Terrell are the 11th and 12th members of the Seminole men’s tennis team that returns 10 players from a season ago and looks to make the NCAA Tournament for a 13th-consecutive season.
