ANCHORAGE, Alaska –
Sophomore Nigel Dixon muscled his way to a career-high 23 points as Florida State beat Rhode Island 86-71 Saturday to take seventh place in the Great Alaska Shootout.
The Seminoles won their first game of the season by consistently finding the 6-10, 350-pound Dixon for lean-in baskets.
Florida State dominated underneath the basket, outrebounding the Rams 49-27. Dixon and Michael Joiner each had 10 rebounds. Both were career-high statistics.
The Rams closed to 52-48 on a free throw by Tavorris Bell with 14:37 left in the second half. But three Dixon free throws and two baskets off putbacks boosted the lead to 69-56.
The Rams managed just two free throws in the first five minutes as the Seminoles ran up a 16-2 lead.
Rhode Island (1-4) closed to 30-26 on a 12-4 run with about five minutes left in the half with Dinno Daniels scoring nine, but Ryan Lowery and Adrian Crawford hit 3-pointers to blunt the comeback.
Bell led Rhode Island scoring with 29.
