FURMAN, S.C – The fall season for the Florida State women’s tennis team started off on a good note as six ladies competed at the Furman Fall Classic this past weekend.
“I was very pleased with the effort the ladies put forth this weekend,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “We stressed last week that we needed to go into this tournament and compete at a very high level and I thought that we delivered.”
Sophomore Daneika Borthwick made a strong debut as a Seminole as she went on to defeat No. 18 Brynn Boren of Tennessee in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of Flight One singles. Borthwick would fall to Gina Suarez- Malaguti of North Carolina in the second round, 6-1, 6-5 before winning the third place match against Lauren Kline of Furman, 6-3, 6-0.
“I was proud of Daneika,” Hyde said. “She defeated a Top 20 opponent in her first-ever college match.”
In flight four, sophomore Mia Vriens recorded three victories in order to secure the championship for the draw. She began the tournament by defeating Kelly Sullivan from Furman 6-1, 2-6, 6-0. In round two, she knocked off Natalia Maynetto of Alabama, 6-2, 7-6 (6) before winning the final match against Yui Lynn Mio of Clemson, 6-1, 6-3.
“It was good for Mia to win her flight this weekend,” Hyde said. “She went undefeated this weekend by playing some solid tennis.”
Sophomore Leyla Erkan battled to the final match of the fifth flight of singles, but fell to Romy Koelzer of Clemson, 7-5, 6-4 to take second place. In the first round, Erkan defeated Joanna Henderson of Tennessee 7-5, 6-0 before adding another win against Alex Moreno of Furman 6-3, 6-3.
“Amy and Fran played some great tennis this weekend,” Hyde said. “They competed unbelievably well.”
In doubles place, Vriens and Borthwick teamed up to take third place in the second flight, while Sargeant and Segarelli finished in fourth.
“I feel like we found out some specific things that we need to work on individually,” Hyde said. “This also gave us a look what we have to be excited about for the rest of the fall season and into the spring. We had a very successful weekend and we’re just going to build off of that as we head into the Rivera/All-American event.”
Three ladies will head to Los Angeles this weekend to compete in the Rivera/All-American Championships. Borthwick and Segarelli will play in the pre-qualifying rounds of singles, while Sargeant will match up with Seagrelli to play in doubles. All pre-qualifying will being Sept. 27 and will be held at UCLA.
