TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the third time this season the Florida State softball team swept a doubleheader with two shutout wins over Maryland on Saturday, April 11, on JoAnne Graf Field. A solo home run by senior Kaleigh Rafter secured the 1-0 win in game one while the Noles picked up an 8-0 run-rule victory in game two. FSU improves to 31-13 and 7-4 in the ACC while the Terps slip to 20-19 and 5-6.

Picking up the win in the opener was sophomore Sarah Hamilton who threw her 11th complete game this season. The Tallahassee native struck out 12 Terrapins while giving up just four hits and two walks and hitting one batter. She now leads the Seminoles pitching staff with a 1.06 ERA and her record improves to 12-5.

While both teams managed to reach base in the early game, the runs just weren’t coming. That is until the bottom of the sixth when leadoff batter Kaleigh Rafter went yard as she took a mighty swing on a 3-2 count to pick up her ninth homerun this season. The Guelph, Ontario native is now tied for sixth in the FSU record books for single-season homers.

Despite only racking up five hits in game one, the Garnet and Gold picked things up in second round with nine hits. Junior Terese Gober was in the circle for FSU and gave up just two hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The win is her 19th this season as she drops her ERA to 1.28.

Florida State wasted no time and was on the board in the first inning as leadoff batter Shayla Jackson reached first on a throwing error by Maryland’s third baseman, Devon Williams, and would advance to second on the throw.

An RBI single down the right field line by Carly Wynn would score Jackson with Rafter on deck. Wynn picked up her 15th stolen base before she plated on a Rafter RBI single to the left fielder.

Up 2-0, the Noles would add four more in the bottom of the fourth on four hits. Senior Michelle Snyder got on with a fielder’s choice followed by a single by pinch hitter Courtney Rosen. Maryland pitcher Sarah Dooley would load the bases as she hit sophomore Brittany Joseph in the thigh.

A Jackson single to left field would score Snyder and both she and Joseph would score on a Rafter two RBI single. With two outs, designated player Mallory Borden laid down a nice hit up the middle to plate Wynn and the Noles would go up 6-0 heading into the fifth.

Kendra Knight would enter the circle for Maryland in the middle of the fourth and managed to strikeout the side in the bottom of the fifth, shutting down Snyder, Kristie McConn and pinch hitter Allison Collins.

The Noles would pick up the two runs needed to end the game early when Wynn scored on a yet another Rafter RBI single. Freshman Amber Bryant pinch ran for Rafter and with two outs, sophomore Ashley Stager knocked the ball into right field to plate Bryant and give FSU the 8-0, six-inning, shutout win.

Florida State will wrap things up with the final game against Maryland on Easter Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will be available live on ACC Select and GameTracker lives stats, both on www.seminoles.com.
