Tallahassee, Fla. – The No. 33 Florida State women’s tennis team (5-5, 0-1 ACC) dropped a tough 5-2 contest against Florida International on Saturday, March 12, 2005 in Miami, Fla. The Seminoles swept doubles for the third time in as many matches and the fourth time this season. FSU has won the first point of the day in eight of ten matches this year.
In doubles, freshman Tapiwa Marobela (Garborone, Botswana/Clapham) and junior captain Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England/Houston) won at the number three position, besting the Golden Panthers tandem of Shilla D’Armas and Bruna Discordia, 8-4. At number two doubles, sophomore Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) and senior Amberly Tantee (Dana Point, Calif./Futures) picked up their third win in the last four matches, beating Paula Zabala and Nikkita Fountain, 8-6.
The Seminoles twelfth-ranked doubles duo of senior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and junior Lindsay Deason (Ft. Myers, Fla./Boca Raton Prep) completed the sweep with an 8-4 decision over #41 Egle Petrauskaite and Desanka Jovanovic.
Moldovan continued her streak of winning seven of her last nine singles matches. One of those losses, which came against the nation’s number one singles player in the country, Miami’s Megan Bradley, went to a third set tiebreaker. The #18-ranked singles player in the country put one of FSU’s two points on the board in a singles win over Paula Zabala, 6-3, 6-4.
The Seminole hit the courts on Monday, March 14, 2005 with the conference home opener against Virginia Tech. First serve is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
